Gov't plants 3,955 coconut palm trees

Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture has planted 3,955 coconut palm trees as part of the tree planting programme.

The tree planting programme began in May to solve the difficulty in obtaining coconuts. The programme was launched in Vaikaradhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, by Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan.

The programme is financed by the Green Fund and aims to plant around 5,000 coconut palms in seven atolls under the supervision of the fisheries ministry. The trees are expected to mature and become profitable within two to three years.

The ministry stated that 3,955 coconut palm trees have been planted in 26 islands under the programme. The ministry aims to distribute the rest of the trees based on the availability of space in the islands, adding that more trees will be brought to the country.
