Yameen chooses Dr. Jameel as running mate

Former Vice President Abdulla Yameen has chosen Dr. Mohamed Jameel as his running mate for the upcoming presidential election.

The main opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has chosen former President Yameen as their candidate for the upcoming presidential election. However, due to his current 11-year prison sentence on charges of corruption and money laundering, he will only be eligible to run in the election if he wins the appeal case at the High Court.

Dr. Jameel currently serves as Yameen's senior legal representative in his court cases. Previously, he held the position of Yameen's running mate during the 2013 presidential election but was later removed from his role as Vice President through a vote of no-confidence in 2015. Following his ousting, he chose to live in self-imposed exile in the United Kingdom (UK) and made serious allegations against Yameen. Additionally, Dr. Jameel actively participated in the opposition coalition during the 2018 presidential election.

Upon the new administration taking office, Dr. Jameel made an unsuccessful attempt to enter Parliament with the Jumhooree Party's ticket. After which, he resumed his affiliation with the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
