The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM), and Maldives National Party (MNP) have appointed election agents.
Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has begun accepting candidates for the upcoming presidential election. The Elections General Act dictate that individuals are required to appoint their election agents prior to submitting their candidacy.
As such, main ruling party MDP has appointed Parliamentarian Mohamed Nashiz as the election agent of its candidate, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Nashiz was the campaign agent of President Solih during the MDP primary election. In addition, Parliamentarian Mohamed Rasheed has been appointed as President Solih's campaign manager.
Moreover, MNP has appointed Ahmed Usham as the election agent for its candidate, Mohamed Nazim. Usham is the former Deputy Attorney General and has played a key role in the formation of MNP.
Meanwhile, main opposition PPM has appointed the party's secretary general Mohamed Tholal as the election agent for former President Abdulla Yameen, the candidate of the opposition coalition. Tholal was a Minister of State for the Ministry of Home Affairs during Yameen's administration. In addition, former director at national airline Maldivian Mohamed Ameen has been appointed as Yameen's campaign manager. Yameen is currently serving an 11-year prison sentence on charges of corruption and money laundering and will only be able to contest in the presidential election if he wins the appeal case at the High Court.
Leaders of MNP, The Democrats, and Jumhooree Party (JP) have stated that they will field a single candidate for the presidential election, if PPM agrees. However, the main opposition party stated that it is only willing to support its own candidate. Currently, political parties are campaigning separately on different platforms.
