Gov’t contracts reclamation projects for airports development

Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure has hired a contractor to complete reclamation projects to commence the development of airports on three islands.

The planning ministry contracted Capital Marine and Civil Construction Company Private Limited to complete reclamation projects on Bilehfahi in Shaviyani Atoll, Thulhaadhoo in Baa Atoll, and Vilufushi in Thaa Atoll. The planning ministry stated that the project will be conducted under a cross-subsidy basis and that the development of airports on the three islands is scheduled to begin next month.

The contract was signed at a special ceremony by Director General of the Planning Ministry Fathimath Shaana Farooq and Managing Director of Capital Marine and Civil Construction Sivaraja Manivannan. Minister of State Akram Kamaluddeen and Parliamentarian Hisaan Husain were also in attendance at the ceremony.

Under the project, Capital Marine and Civil Construction is tasked with reclaiming 45 hectares of land in Thulhaadhoo, 56 hectares in Vilufushi and 56 hectares Bilehfahi. The company is expected to complete the project within 280 days at a cost of USD2.8 million.

The development of the airports is part of the administration’s pledge to establish airports within 30 minutes of every inhabited island in the Maldives. As part of the efforts, the administration has opened several domestic airports with more in development. In addition, major projects such as the develop of Hanimaadhoo International Airport and Gan International Airport are underway.
