Gov't launches construction of mosque in Himandhoo

Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Zahir has launched the construction of a mosque in Himandhoo, Alifu Alifu Atoll. Minister Zahir and President of Himandhoo Island Council Husham Ismail launched the project with members of the council, senior officials of the Islamic ministry, and island residents in attendance at a special ceremony.

Ministry of Islamic Affairs stated that the new mosque will have a capacity of 300 worshipers with a special area for women. The agreement to construct the mosque was contracted to Elite International Private Limited and is expected to be completed within one year at a cost of USD668,800.

President of Himandhoo Island Council Husham said the current mosque is around 30 years old and can also accommodate 300 worshippers at a time. He, however, said that the construction of a new mosque is important due to the growing population on the island.

Mosques are being constructed in various parts of the country as part of the government’s initiative to expand basic and essential services to all inhabited islands including small communities.
