JSC Appoints Abdulla Jameel and Mohamed Shaheed to the High Court

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has appointed Abdulla Jameel Moosa and Mohamed Shaheed as judges of the High Court of the Maldives.

The JSC said the appointments were made following submission of applications by interested individuals for the post of High Court judgeship. After interviewing candidates, the Commission selected Jameel and Shaheed for the two vacant seats on the bench.

Abdulla Jameel Moosa holds a Bachelor of Shariah and Law with Honours from Kulliyathul Dhiraasathul Islamiyya. He over 15 years of experience as a judge. Jameel was most recently a judge of the Civil Court, and, following his resignation from the post, he has been working as a lawyer.

Mohamed Shaheed earned his Bachelor in Shariah and Law with Honours from the Islamic University of the Maldives. He has worked as a lawyer for Honeywell Trading Company Private Limited, and most recently serviced as a Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology.

The two seats in the High Court bench become vacant following the appointment of former High Court judges Abdulla Hameed and Mohamed Saleem as Supreme Court judges. The High Court has 11 judges in total.

According to the Judiciary Act, High Court judges are appointed by a majority vote of the members of the Judicial Service Commission. Appointees must take an oath and sign an affidavit before assuming their role.
