Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has launched charging stations for electronic vehicles (EV) buses used in public transport in the Greater Male' Region. The initiative is a component of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)'s Climate Promise Project conducted in collaboration with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) and the ministry, and funded by the government of Japan.
The charging station was officially inaugurated at a ceremony by Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives Takeuchi Midori, Resident Representative of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Enrico Gaveglia and Chief Operating Officer (CEO) of MTCC Adam Azim.
Speaking at the ceremony to inaugurate the charging station in Male' City, Minister Nahula said it was an important milestone in achieving the government's goal of making the Maldives a net zero country. She also described it as a step towards a greener and more sustainable environment. In addition, she said the project resonates with the policies and initiatives of both the government and UNDP to bring together strong and effective partners and align climate change mitigation and development.
MTCC began providing minibus services in the city on September 5, 2022. As the largest transportation service provider in the Maldives, MTCC aims to provide affordable and convenient sea and land transport services to the public.
