MTCC completes Kurendhoo Shore Protection Project

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has successfully completed the shore protection project in Kurendhoo, Lhaviyani Atoll.

The scope of the project included several key elements to safeguard the island's shoreline. The project encompassed 10,200cbm of beach filling, the construction of a 361m breakwater, an 822m revetment, and 142m groynes.

The effects of erosion in Kurendhoo have been particularly evident with houses suffering damage and the football grounds beyond repair by the high tides experienced in 2021. The island council expressed confidence that the recently completed shore protection project will effectively resolve these issues. The project's successful implementation is expected to bring relief to the community, providing them with increased resilience against future erosion and tides.

The project, valued at USD2.7 million, aimed to address the persistent challenges of high tides and erosion that have been a longstanding concern for the island's 2,094 residents, who primarily rely on tourism for their livelihoods.
