The Maldives has expressed pride in rejoining the Commonwealth of Nations. The remarks were made by the Secretary Bilateral at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Hala Hameed while speaking at a special assembly held in Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani School in Gan, Laamu Atoll, to mark Commonwealth Day.

In her speech, Secretary Bilateral Hala noted how proud the Maldives is to rejoin the Commonwealth, an organisation that embraces rich diversity, friendship, democratic values, and sustainable development. She further highlighted the key benefits of Commonwealth membership, including capacity-building opportunities and being a voice for small island developing states on issues such as climate change.

During the special assembly, a school student hoisted the Commonwealth Flag for Peace to mark the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Commonwealth Charter. The school also held a walk to mark Commonwealth Day.

Commonwealth Day is celebrated every year on March 13. The Commonwealth Flag for Peace initiative was launched by the Commonwealth to mark the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Commonwealth Charter by Queen Elizabeth II.
