Maldives Police Service (MPS) has begun using taser guns that register electric shocks in various operations.
In a tweet, Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed said that taser guns will be used by specially trained police officers of the rank of sergeant and above. At a press conference held in 2022, Commissioner Hameed said that the taser gun will provide solutions to the current problems faced by police in various situations and will be used for the safety and security of police officers and the community.
Police officers equipped with taser guns will have a body-worn camera on their uniform. The camera will record everything that happens in the area and the behaviour of the police officer if they were to use the weapon in a case.
The taser guns to be used by MPS are manufactured in the United States (US) and are used in many developed countries. The TASER 7 is the latest version of the model.
