MRM falls short of minimum membership required by law

Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) led by former President Maumoon Abdula Gayyoom has once again fallen short of the minimum membership requirement of a political party.

Elections Commission Maldives (ECM) had sent notice to the MRM for falling short of the minimum membership required by law in June last year as well. However, MRM reached 3,000 members by the given deadline. As per the statistics of MRM, ECM currently has 2,981 members.

Most recently, ECM dissolved Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and Maldives Labour and Social Democratic Party (MLSDP) over failure to meet the minimum requirement.

MRM is the third political party formed by former President Maumoon since 2005 when political parties were allowed to be formed. MRM was registered in ECM on November 20, 2019.
