Magistrate suspended for changing case documents after verdict

Magistrate of the Fuvahmulah Magistrate Court Ahmed Akram has been suspended for seven days for making changes to case documents after issuing his verdict.

JSC stated that in February 19, 2020, the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) submitted an appeal at the Fuvahmulah Magistrate Court based on a summary report shared by Magistrate Akram after giving his verdict in a case. It stated that the magistrate court forwarded the appeal to the High Court after changing the summary report.

JSC highlighted that it was a gross violation of the established laws to change the summary report to include clauses that Magistrate Akram had not indicated in his verdict. It further stated that the magistrate court had attempted to manipulate the case by changing the appeal submitted by the PGO and withholding the original document.

As such, JSC suspended Magistrate Akram without pay for seven days for violating the Judges Act and the JSC regulations.
