ACC concerned over negligence in recovering ill-gotten wealth

President of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Adam Shamil has expressed concern over the negligence of the state in recovering ill-gotten wealth. He made the remark in the ceremony held to publish the report on the current state of asset recovery in the Maldives.

Speaking at the ceremony, Shamil highlighted the importance of returning assets recovered from cases of ill-gotten wealth to their rightful owners. He, however, said that the failures in preventing corruption resulted in assets used in the act and the wealth received being transferred overseas. He said that these acts occurred because of the negligence of state officials but that the ACC is now working with the relevant authorities to recover the assets.

Additionally, Shamil acknowledged the support from the Maldives Police Office (MPS), Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO), and Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) in the work to establish an asset recovery system. He noted that efforts to stop corruption is always met with derision but assured that ACC will work towards achieving results.

The report on the current state of asset recovery in the Maldives assessed the state’s efforts to recover ill-gotten wealth and the flaws in the current system.
