MTCC completes Kolhufushi Shore Protection Project

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has conducted the shore protection project in Kolhufushi, Meemu Atoll.

The shore protection project of Kolhufushi was contracted to MTCC by the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure in November 2021. The state-owned company was tasked with completing the project within one year at a cost of USD1.5 million. The scope of the project involved dredging operations of 9,683cbm as well as the construction of a 202m breakwater and a 519m revetment. Four areas exposed to erosion were protected as part of the project.

Speaking to PSM News. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTCC Adam Azim said that the erosion has caused serious damage to Kolhufushi. He said that many palm trees have fallen in different parts of the island due to erosion.

Kolhufushi has a population of 4,600 residents and is one of the many islands in the Maldives heavily impacted by erosion.
