President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed attended the official celebrations to mark the 60th Independence Day of the Maldives, held at the Republic Square.
The event was also attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in the Maldives on a State Visit, along with senior government officials and dignitaries.
The celebrations began with the ceremonial Presidential salute presented to President Dr Muizzu. This was followed by the national anthem and a grand parade by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the National Cadet Corps.
Cultural performances were also presented by students from four schools in the Male’, as well as by Kelaa Youth Forum, Mulee Ekuveringe Dhirun and Heyvallaa Group.
As part of the festivities, the MNDF and National Cadet Corps parade proceeded along the main streets of Male’ City. The march began at 16:15 and featured musical performances at four designated locations along the route. A large number of citizens gathered to witness the celebrations.
The Maldives Independence Day is celebrated on 26 July, commemorating the Maldives’ independence from British protectorate status in 1965 after 77 years. This year marks the 60th anniversary of Independence.
