President says main duty of police is to protect human rights

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the primary duty of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) is to protect the human rights of the public. He made the remarks while speaking at the graduation ceremony of the 34th Police Initial Training Course held at the National College of Policing and Law Enforcement in Addu City.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Solih said that the main duty of the MPS is to protect human rights and serve the citizens and the country. He said the most important responsibility of the service is to maintain stability, security, and peace. In addition, he noted the public has high expectations of the police force. He, therefore, said that the government attaches great importance to providing modern training to the police.

Additionally, President Solih said that MPS faces many difficulties and challenges, adding however that MPS is playing an exemplary role in providing services to the public. He also said that the police service can be provided to the public in the most effective manner by addressing the issues that concern most in every society. As such, he noted that that was also the purpose of launching the neighbourhood policing system, which would also facilitate the implementation of the government’s policy of building a crime-free and safe society through decentralised policing.

Furthermore, President Solih said that the biggest challenge that has been around for years in the Maldives is drugs. He said that the prevention of violence against women and children is also an integral part of the efforts of MPS, as it raises awareness among the public and also facilitates the provision of adequate protection to the victims.

In conclusion, President Solih said that extremism is also a huge issue faced in society. He said that MPS takes precautionary measures before a dangerous crime is committed, adding that the service has the scientific and technical capacity to face such challenges.
