Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has stated that establishing a juvenile detention centre in Asseyri Prison in Himmafushi, Kaafu Atoll is a significant step forward.
At the ceremony to commemorate the 14th anniversary of Asseyri Prison, Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu said that reforms planned for Asseyri Prison were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He, however, said that many of the reforms have now been implemented thanks to the hard work of prison officials.
As such, Commissioner Mohamed Fulhu said the opening of the juvenile detention centre is a huge success and a significant step forward for the initiative to rehabilitate delinquents. He also said that infrastructural reforms will be implemented in order to develop Asseyri Prison and fit it into a professional model.
At the function, prison officials were awarded commemorative plaques for exceptional performance. A flag-hoisting ceremony was held to commemorate the 14th anniversary of Asseyri Prison.
