Gov’t begins regulating management of waste

Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has begun monitoring and regulating the management of waste in accordance with the newly ratified Waste Management Act.

Speaking at a press conference, Deputy Minister Ansar said the government places a high priority on solving the longstanding issues in waste management and that it was only recently that the government received the legal authority to take action.

The Waste Management Act allows the government to monitor the production and management of waste as well as regulate the waste produced by businesses in various industries including tourism.

Furthermore, the environment ministry has revealed the milestones the government intends to reach in 2023 as part of its efforts to bring major changes to the waste management industry, in accordance with the Waste Management Act. As such, the government plans to build waste management centres in 79 islands, provide more equipment and resources to 113 existing centres, and deliver waste collection vehicles to 48 islands.
