Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has revealed the new runway of Velana International Airport (VIA) will be used as a taxiway. MACL announced plans to use the new runway of VIA as a taxiway from February 1 onwards.
Speaking to PSM News, a media official from MACL said the time spent on landing will be decreased with the use of the new runway as a taxiway. He said that the number of flights landed per hour will increase to 16 from 8 flights before. He also said the time spent clearing flights will be reduced and the congestion at VIA will also be reduced with the use of the new runway.
The new runway is 3,400m long and 65m wide and can accommodate wide-bodied passenger aircraft. The test flights landed on the runway in 2018.
