Minister of Health, Family and Welfare Geela Ali has said 67 percent of the government’s targets in health, family and social assistance have been achieved.
The minister made the statement while delivering a presentation on the health sector developments at the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC)‘s Congress 2026.
According to Geela, the government made 478 health-sector commitments, of which a large percentage have already been achieved. While 244 decisions have been made for the health, family and social assistance sectors, 835 health-related projects are ongoing at various stages, with a total of 8,384 activities conducted.
The minister compared the achievements of the past government over their five-year term and the current government’s achievements in the health sector to date. She said projects worth USD 387.81 million have been awarded under the current government over almost three years, compared with USD 169.91 million awarded by the previous government over five years.
The minister said 40 hospital projects have been started under the current government, while 16 were carried out during the previous five-year period. Additionally, 22 new health-centre constructions have been started, compared with 14 started during the last term. Futhermore, 89 health-facility upgrade projects have been implemented in the past three years, compared with 102 under the previous government over five years.
Speaking on health sector development, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Male’ City Group of Hospitals, Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem said the government has improved health sector resource availability as well as prioritised making services more convenient for the public. He noted that the government has standardised Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH)‘s operation-theatre complex to international standards and established a 75-bed multi-specialty surgical wing without constructing an additional building. It was the government of President Dr Muizzu that brought the Dharumavantha Hospital building into true operation, he noted. He further added that the government is prioritising improvements to other health facilities in Male’ region in order to bring faster, more reliable services for the public.
