Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture has commenced work to repair damaged Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) set up across the Maldives to assist local fishermen.
The fisheries ministry has been setting up FADs across the country since1981. The ministry began the project in an effort to reduce the expenses of fuel by fishermen.
Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan revealed efforts are ongoing to repair FADs in Filladhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll, Maduvvari, Meemu Atoll, Hulhudheli, Dhaalu Atoll, and Dhevvadhoo, Gaafu Alifu Atoll. In addition, the minister said a FAD will also be placed in Fulhadhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll.
Currently, there are 56 FADs across the country, with the fisheries ministry planning to place 30 more FADs next year.
