Speaker Nasheed denounces India Out campaign led by Ex-President Yameen

Speaker of Parliament and President of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Mohamed Nasheed has denounced the “India Out” campaign led by former President Abdulla Yameen, calling it an effort to destroy domestic peace and stability.

Speaking at a meeting held to meet members of MDP from the Male’ constituency, Speaker Nasheed said former President Yameen should not be allowed to run a campaign that is destructive towards domestic peace and stability, as well as the well-being of the public. He called on law enforcement agencies to take action against such campaigns.

Speaking further, Nasheed said the India Out campaign is embarrassing to the whole country, noting no former president of any country in the world would conduct campaigns against a specific country. He reiterated this campaign is not driven by national interest, and is rather driven by political and personal interests.

The government also released a statement earlier this week denouncing the India Out campaign. A statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on December 19 read that while the government champions the freedom of expression and freedom of assembly, it strongly believes these fundamental rights should be exercised in a democratic and responsible manner. The government stated spreading hatred and making false allegations regarding bilateral ties with neighbouring countries not only tarnishes the relations with trusted allies who extends consistent support to the Maldivian people, but also affect the safety and security of their citizens in Maldives, and Maldivians living abroad.

The government urged all parties, especially the political leadership, to act responsibly, and refrain from spreading false information that undermines the country’s cordial relations with its neighbours, and the international community.
