Kendhikulhudhoo eyes mariculture expansion

The Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam has met with the Kendhikulhudhoo Council and the constituency MP Mohamed Afoo Hamid to explore avenues for advancing the island's fisheries and agricultural sectors.

A key focus of the discussions centered on developing mariculture as a thriving commercial industry in Kendhikulhudhoo (Noonu Atoll), with officials exchanging insights on crucial steps needed to promote and sustain the sector. The meeting also provided local leaders with the latest updates regarding the ongoing development of the Kendhikulhudhoo neighbourhood fish factory.

The talks align with broader national initiatives by the government to establish mariculture as a distinct and robust industry across the archipelago. As part of this national strategy, the administration has designated five specific regions for mariculture development. To support this growth and build local expertise, the Ministry is actively conducting island-level training programmes. To date, six sessions have been successfully completed, equipping 76 individuals with the skills necessary to drive the emerging sector forward.
