Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment to conduct the training of youth under the National Apprenticeship Programme.
The MoU was signed on December 8 by Managing Director of WAMCO Adam Mohamed and Minister of State for Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Hussain Ismail. Speaking at the signing ceremony, Managing Director Adam Mohamed said the main aim of WAMCO in conducting the programme is to create additional jobs for locals, and to facilitate opportunities for the development of practical skills. He added WAMCO hopes to establish a strong waste management field in the country, with certified and skilled workers at all levels.
Under the programme, WAMCO will teach welding techniques, cashiering, inventory management, heavy vehicle operations, marine mechanics and maintenance mechanics. Participants will be trained for a duration of 6 month, and will receive a monthly allowance of USD 323 during the programme.
The National Apprenticeship Programme is conducted jointly by the youth ministry, Ministry of Higher Education and Maldives Skills Development Authority (MSDA). The aim of the programme is to train 3,000 youth in various fields within the next one year, and facilitate employment opportunities for them.
