President of the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) Alok Sharma has appointed Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna to facilitate ministerial negotiations on adaptations under the COP agenda.
Announcing the appointment, Spokesperson of President's Office Mohamed Mabrook Azeez said Minister Shauna's scope of work is reaching an agreement on the methodology and process to define the global goal on adaptation under the Paris Agreement, as well as agreeing on details regarding financing for adaptation. He added Minister Shauna will be working alongside Vice-President and Minister for the Ecological Transition of Spain Teresa Ribera.
Before departing to COP26, Minister Shauna expressed hope the COP26 summit will increase the expenditure of countries on climate change.
She also noted the islands of the Maldives have been submerged due to climate change and the water layer of almost every island in the country has been contaminated.
