President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has appointed Mariyam Muna as the President and Dr. Ahmed Adham Abdulla as the Vice President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM). The president made the appointments under the powers vested in him by Section 8 of the Human Rights Commission Act.
Mariyam Muna attained her Master of Business Administration from Edith Cowan University, Australia. She was a member of HRCM prior to the appointment and has previously worked in a variety of jobs, including the post of Corporate Secretary in Asia Shipping and International Trading and other high-level posts in government and non-governmental organisations.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ahmed Adham Abdulla holds a Doctor of Philosophy in International Law from the University of Wollongong, Australia. He previously served as a lecturer in public international law at Villa College. He is also a recipient of the President's Award for Achieving the Highest Academic Qualification and of the Australia Leadership Award. He was a member of HRCM prior to the appointment.
Muna and Adham were nominated by President Solih to fill the presidency and vice presidency positions at the HRCM and approved by the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Gender. Muna and Adham nominations were passed by the Parliament with votes from 47 and 46 parliamentarians respectively.
