Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail has announced all resort workers will receive at least USD 776 per month upon the implementation of minimum wage in the Maldives.
Speaking at the ceremony held to announce minimum wage, Economic Minister Fayyaz said the introduction of minimum wage will ensure all resort workers receive at least USD 776 per month, which would fulfill the government’s pledge to ensure resort workers receive a minimum monthly wage of USD 650. He noted the implementation of minimum wage would increase the wages of 60% resort workers by two-fold.
As per the latest national statistics, over 35,000 people are employed in Maldivian resorts. This includes both local and expatriate workers. However, the government announced minimum wage for expatriates would only be introduced after 3 years.
As per a survey by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), resort workers earn an average monthly income between USD 300-499. About 17% of resort workers earn less than USD 300 as basic salary.
