President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Tuvalu Deputy Prime Minister Panapasi Nelesone have discussed the need for stronger climate finance and international funding mechanisms to help Small Island Developing States (SIDS) tackle economic and environmental vulnerabilities.
The talks took place during a courtesy call by Nelesone on President Muizzu on the sidelines of the SIDS Global Business Network Forum 2026 and Island Investment Forum in the Maldives.
The two leaders discussed the challenges faced by SIDS, including limited access to financing and growing environmental pressures. They highlighted the importance of climate finance and sustainable investment that take into account the particular circumstances of small island nations.
President Dr Muizzu welcomed closer engagement between the Maldives and Tuvalu, while stressing the importance of solidarity among SIDS in addressing shared challenges.
The SIDS Global Business Network Forum 2026 and Island Investment Forum is being held from 23 to 25 August, bringing together representatives from governments, the private sector and development organisations.
The forum is focused on developing partnerships and investment opportunities aimed at supporting sustainable and resilient growth across SIDS.
The discussions between the Maldives and Tuvalu come as island nations continue to call for greater international support to address climate-related risks and strengthen their economic resilience.
