MTCC begins work at Kuda Giri project site

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has mobilised the land reclamation and shore protection project in Kuda Giri, Kaafu Atoll.

Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure contracted MTCC for the development of the island in September. The scope of the project includes reclamation operations of eight hectares, construction of a 397-metre rock boulder breakwater, and a 428-metre rock boulder revetment. MTCC is tasked with completing the project by March 2022 at a cost of USD 3 million.

Kuda Giri is located 11 kilometres away from Male' City. The government plans to develop Kuda Giri as a picnic island by reclaiming one island in the area for travel and another island as a sandbank. The government also plans to build family rooms, bathrooms, changing rooms, nursing rooms, lockers, and space allocated for events in Kuda Giri.

The design concept also includes areas for various sports and special areas for beach sports, children's sports, and barbeques. CEO of MTCC Adam Azim said the concept is to develop the island similar to Kuda Bandos, which was previously utilised as a picnic island for the residents living in the region.

The residents in the Greater Male' Region lost the only picnic island within the accessible proximity following the redevelopment of Kuda Bandos as a resort.
