Minister Khaleel Highlights Key Role of Research in Societies' Advancement

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdulla Khaleel on Tuesday highlighted the fundamental role played by research in the advancement of societies, describing it as essential especially for countries like the Maldives.

Speaking at the inauguration of Maldives National University’s (MNU) flagship annual Conference, Thelevi International Conference 2025, Minister Dr Khaleel stressed that research and knowledge push the boundaries of our understanding, providing solutions to problems, and helping us to navigate complexities for the future.

“Explaining the challenges we face from our perspective helps the world understand our unique voice. It helps to promote home-based approaches,” he explained.

Describing research as essential rather than a luxury for the Maldives, the Minister insisted that without research, without evidence, we risk being reactive and lose the ability to gain resilience and foresight.

Minister Dr Khaleel expressed delight by presence of so many international participants in this year’s conference, adding that their engagement enriches the dialogue, bringing global perspectives to local challenges, and strengthening the bonds of collaboration between nations and institutions.

He also pointed out that the incumbent government recognises the critical role, research and knowledge play in shaping the nation’s future by expanding support for research grants, particularly in areas that align with national priorities—climate adaptation, sustainable tourism, digital innovation, renewable energy and social development.

“These are not just topics of study; they are matters that determine the well-being and prosperity of our people,” he said.

According to the Minister, the challenges faced are too great for any one sector or institution to solve alone, but through shared knowledge and collective effort, we can craft solutions that will sustain the nation and inspire others.
