Maldives State Shipping (MSS) has announced the arrival of its first own shipping vessel.
This is the first vessel purchased by the National Shipping Company, which is a subsidiary of the State Trading Organisation (STO).
Previously, MSS revealed the major reason behind the lack of profit to the company is the use of chartered vessels to carry containers. MSS stated the new vessel has a capacity of 680 containers. Branding of the vessel will be done in Sri Lanka, MSS said, adding 99% of the vessel crew will be Maldivians.
Further, MSS expects the new vessel will enhance direct shipping services between the Maldives and Sri Lanka. Since its formation, MSS has been operated vessels between the two countries without interruption.
MSS is a new shipping and logistics company launched in 2020 offering an extensive international liner shipping service. MSS aims to facilitate the import of goods to the Maldives at affordable prices.
