Addu City Council has revealed the contractor has begun the construction of the Addu City bridge. The project was contracted to India-based Afcons Infrastructure Limited.
One of the most important road development projects contracted to Afcons Infrastructure includes the construction of the bridge outside Hankede. The bridge is located southwest of Hankede which is a separate island on the link road. The bridge is 1.4 kilometres long and would have four lanes.
Speaking regarding the project, Mayor of Addu City Ali Nizar revealed the bridge in Addu will demonstrate the development of the Addu Link Road in the future.
Currently, two major projects of road development are underway in the city. The biggest of the two projects is the bridge, which the government has allocated over USD 77 million for its construction. The project awarded to Afcons Infrastructure is scheduled to be completed within two years.
The council stated the equipment required for the project was transported to Addu in late September. The council also noted 150 of the 600 laborers required for the project have arrived in the city as of now.
As part of the project, 3.3 kilometres of the link road in Addu will be resurfaced and a new 27 kilometre road is to be paved. The road will be constructed with a cement base layer on 67 kilometers of the road.
Under the project, road lights, traffic signs, and CCTV cameras are also to be installed on the streets of Addu. Addu City Council has stated the issue of sewerage systems and flooding on the roads will also be resolved by the end of the road development project.
