Gov't to allot funds for Ukulhas Health Centre upgrade in 2022

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed the government will allot funds in next year's state budget for the upgrade of the health centre in Ukulhas, Alifu Alifu Atoll.

Addressing the gathering at the Ukulhas Convention Centre, President Solih said funds will also be allotted for the Ukulhas road development project. He also said vulnerable island communities such as Ukulhas, which are heavily reliant upon tourism as the main income source, had suffered the most due to the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Collaborative efforts from the people and the government had assisted the country to overcome the downturn as one of the first nations to revive its economy, he stated.

The president also spoke with the residents and highlighted the concerns raised by the island council. He clarified that efforts are underway to address the issue of the difficulties faced in using the island harbour and ferry terminal.

At the gathering, residents from Ukulhas shared their concerns with the president and emphasised issues such as the need for better equipment for the school and sports infrastructure. The president and cabinet ministers also shared the details of the administration's plans for alleviating the housing problem and answered public queries. He assured that the administration will work towards the progress of Ukulhas, and said the government will recognise public perception to guide the administration's way forward by shaping policies to reflect the feedback.

During his trip, President Solih had also met with local businessmen and guesthouse owners from the island and enquired about the challenges they face.
