Maldives National Association of Construction Industry (MNACI) has announced it will confer health and safety awards to companies with exceptional safety records.
The award is called Rawshan Jian, in honour of the eight-year-old who died in 2019 after succumbing to injuries sustained in an accident at a construction site. MNACI will confer the awards on World Day for Safety and Health at Work on April 28 next year.
Speaking to PSM News, President of MNACI Mohamed Ali Janah said the association introduced the Rawshan Jian as part of its work to improve safety standards in the construction industry. Janah said the association has been unable to confer the awards this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Janah expressed his hope that the association can increase awareness of health and safety at construction sites by giving out the awards. He said MNACI will confer awards to construction companies that adhere to the required health and safety standards for their workers. He added that he expects more construction companies will vie for the awards in the future by increasing their safety standards.
MNACI represents, secures, and sustains the interests of the stakeholders of the Maldivian construction industry. It also advocates for strict safety standards at construction sites to prevent accidents and safeguard workers and bystanders. The association currently consists of over 300 registered construction companies.
