Agricultural development crucial for sustainable economic progress: Agriculture Minister

Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan has stated agricultural development is crucial towards efforts to achieve sustainable economic progress.

Speaking at the ceremony held to inaugurate the farmer’s forum in Kandoodhoo, Thaa Atoll, Minister Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan said one of the main lessons learnt during the COVID-19 pandemic was that the country cannot afford to solely rely on the tourism industry. He said fisheries and agriculture sectors need to be developed and strengthened to ensure a healthy and sustainable economy.

The minister acknowledged that the agriculture sector of the Maldives is not in the best of states, noting the sector has so much potential to be broadened. He noted the government is undertaking several projects to boost the sector and provide a good income for farmers.

The two-day forum in Kandoodhoo is attended virtually by farmers from all over the country. During the forum, farmers will be sharing their concerns and challenges, and discuss with relevant authorities and institutions on resolving such issues.
