Workshop held to discuss classification of tourism accommodations

Ministry of Tourism has held a special workshop to discuss the classification of tourism accommodations in the Maldives.

Participants at the workshops included tourism industry stakeholders as well as members of tourism-related organisations, ministries, and government administration.

Speaking at the workshop, Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom emphasised the importance of establishing a classification system for tourism accommodations in the Maldives.

The workshop is part of the government's strategic action plan to expand local tourism. At the workshop, participants discussed classifying tourism accommodations as part of the one-island on-resort concept or as part of the integrated tourism concept.

The tourism ministry also gathered opinions on the various products that tourism accommodations will make available in the future. The ministry stated participants had also discussed homestay tourism, which is set to begin in January next year. Findings from the workshop are expected to help streamline the Maldives Tourism Act and forthcoming homestay tourism.

Currently, the tourism products available in the Maldives are hotels, resorts, guesthouses, and liveaboards. However, tourism accommodations operating in the Maldives have not been officially classified into categories.
