Ministry of Finance has revealed around USD 1.9 million has been spent from the Green Fund in July.
The latest Green Fund Report published by the Ministry of Finance shows 16 projects were financed using the Green Fund in July. They include projects to establish coastal protection, water supply, waste management, and sewerage systems in various parts of the country.
In July, around USD 1.1 million from the Green Fund was spent on the outer island harbour, water supply, and sewerage project, which is part of the third phase of the OPEC Fund for International Development. The report also shows USD 251,000 was spent on the establishment of a drainage system in Feydhoo, Addu City.
Furthermore, the Green Fund Report shows USD 1.8 million was added to the fund in July through green tax collection. The government received the lowest amount in green tax collection in July so far this year, which is estimated to be the result of the low number of tourist visits that month as a result of the spike in COVID-19 cases in the country.
Around USD 647,000 was received from tax collected from resorts and guesthouses in Kaafu Atoll and USD 176,000 was received from tax collected in Raa Atoll.
The Maldives Green Fund contains USD 66 million as of July. The Green Fund was introduced to tackle environmental issues in the Maldives as per the Tourism Act of the Maldives.
