MNDF allows use of expired IDs for domestic travel

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has begun allowing individuals to use expired identification documents for domestic travel.

A circular published by the MNDF directorate of security administration stated it made the decision following complaints of difficulties individuals are facing in renewing their identification documents. MNDF stated individuals will now be allowed to use expired documents for domestic travel. As such, individuals will be able to use expired identity cards, passports, work visas, license cards, airport security passes, as well as government documents with the person's photo and identity card number.

Travellers will be able to use expired documents to obtain tickets and check-in at airlines and pass security checkpoints if the necessary information is in the documents. MNDF stated travellers will continue to be able to use expired documents for domestic travel until such a time the directorate of security administration announces the revocation of permissions.

Similarly, the Department of National Registration (DNR) has also allowed the use of expired identity cards in response to the challenges faced by individuals following the COVID-19 pandemic. The department allowed expired identity cards to be used for travel, doctor's appointments, and official use.
