Parliament approves three nominations for the LGA board

Parliament of the Maldives has approved three nominations for the board of the Local Government Authority (LGA).

The parliament approved Azha Zameer and Fathimath Niuma with 43 votes in favour, and Fathimath Zeena Ali with 42 votes in favour.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih submitted five nominations that are experienced in the required three fields to be appointed to the LGA board. The Parliamentary Committee on Decentralisation reviewed and interviewed the nominees and finalised three names for approval. Of the three nominations that received approval, Azha Zameer is experienced in the field of gender equality, while Fathimath Niuma is experienced in governance and administration, and Fathimath Zeena Ali is a member of a non-governmental organisation (NGO).

LGA is a state institution established under the Decentralisation Act to regulate, oversee and develop the local governance system of the Maldives as envisioned in the constitution. LGA comprises of a nine-member board that currently has three vacant seats that need to be filled with a female member experienced in the field of gender equality, a member experienced in governance or administration, and a member from an NGO.
