Over 9,000 tourist beds brought to operation in Q2

Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has revealed the tourist beds brought into operation in the second quarter have increased by 9%.

As per the quarterly economic bulletin published by MMA, 9,281 tourist beds were brought into operation in the second quarter, which is an increase of 953% compared to the same period last year. The statistics show operational bed capacity of the industry continued to be dominated by tourist resorts, with a share of 76%, followed by guesthouses with a share of 15 percent during the quarter.

MMA revealed the occupancy rate rose to 41%, up from 4%in the same period last year, reflecting these developments. Meanwhile, the average occupancy rate of resorts remained at 46 percent during the second quarter of the year which is a 4% increase compared to the second quarter of 2020.

Minister of Tourism Abdullah Mausoom has said significant progress has been achieved by the tourism industry since the reopening of borders in July 2020. As such, he noted over 94% of tourist beds have been brought back into operation, while the majority of employees who lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic have been reinstated.
