A workshop aimed at discussing the strengthening of the civil justice system of the Maldives has been held by the Attorney General’s Office. Convened at Hotel Jen, the gathering brought together key legal stakeholders across two deliberative sessions organised around the central theme of reviewing the Civil Procedure Code and reforming the civil justice system.
The inaugural session was dedicated to a comprehensive review of the Civil Procedure Code. During these discussions, participants examined operational friction points and implementation hurdles encountered since the statute came into force, whilst outlining statutory amendments necessary to address those operational challenges.
In the second session, attention shifted towards broader civil justice reform, with deliberations centring on systemic constraints, administrative management within the courts, and specific measures to expedite case disposition through technology and digital tools. The conference concluded following the presentation of key policy recommendations, a determination to conduct further research, and an outline of upcoming initiatives.
The reform efforts coincide with broader state measures being implemented to fortify court administration across the country. While ongoing interventions target backlog reduction and service acceleration in the higher courts, strengthening administrative operations in local island magistrate courts remains equally vital to advancing the broader judicial sector, officials noted.
