Parliament approves Mohamed Asif for ECM membership

Parliament of the Maldives has approved Mohamed Asif to be appointed to the vacant membership position at the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM). He was approved for the position with 50 parliamentarians voting in favour.

The Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions endorsed Asif after reviewing the five nominations sent by the President's Office for the position. Asif's nomination was passed by the committee with votes from 10 members.

The President's Office opened applications for ECM membership after the resignation of the President of ECM Ahmed Shareef from the electoral body. Shareef was appointed to the ECM on March 6, 2018, and resigned on July 15 this year after serving in the commission during three elections.

Currently, there are four members in the commission, including the Vice-President of the ECM Ismail Habeeb.
