Too soon to claim COVID-19 poses no danger: Tourism Minister

Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has stated it is too soon to claim COVID-19 poses no danger, despite the ease of restriction in the country.

In a tweet, Minister Mausoom highlighted the importance of continuing to adhere to COVID-19 guidelines, especially the individuals working in the tourism industry. He also warned it is still too soon to take the COVID-19 pandemic lightly.

The minister's tweet follows the government's decision to ease COVID-19 restrictions and the beginning of a nationwide campaign aimed at inoculating 90% of the eligible Maldivian population.

The latest statistics from Health Protection Agency (HPA) show 113 positive cases recorded on August 7, including 25 cases in the Greater Male' Region, 73 cases in the atolls, and 13 cases at resorts. The number of positive cases recorded in the Greater Male' Region has remained consistently low, although the number of positive cases in the atolls occasionally fluctuates.

As part of the government vaccination programme, HPA announced that special guidelines for unvaccinated individuals will be enforced beginning on September 1.
