Families of inmates allowed to visit after completing two doses of COVID-19 vaccine

Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has allowed families of inmates to visit prison if they have completed two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

MCS had suspended family visits in prison due to the outbreak of COVID-19. MCS has permitted the resumption of family visits under a new guideline, which requires the family members to have completed two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days before the day of the visit. They are also required to present a negative PCR test conducted 72 hours before the visit. The same rules apply for lawyers of inmates.

Furthermore, the guideline states children under the age of 18 visiting prison must carry a negative PCR test conducted 72 hours before the visit. No more than 5 people are allowed for a single family visit, including children. Meanwhile, a maximum of 3 lawyers will be permitted for a single meeting with an inmate.

The guideline further states family members and lawyers visiting an inmate are required to wear face masks at all times during the visit. If somebody is required to take off their mask under any circumstances, they must maintain a distance of 3 feet with others. MCS stated any violation of the guidelines will result in the termination of the meeting.

MCS has transferred all high-risk inmates to house arrest due to COVID-19. MCS said discussions are underway on making arrangements to transfer them back to prison, although no dates have been allocated for the transfer.
