The Government of India hands over vehicles procured by Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) through Indian grant assistance.
The vehicles were officially handed over in a virtual ceremony organised on July 14. The ceremony was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid, High Commissioner of India to the Maldives Sunjay Sudhir, Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu and other officials from MCS, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the High Commission of India.
The 4 prison vans handed over during the ceremony will transport prisoners within Male’ City – moving between Male’ Prison and Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), Civil, Criminal and Drug Courts as well as the High Court and Supreme Court. It will ease road transportation requirements of MCS, help out during medical emergencies, court hearings and enable MCS to maintain segregation and separation of prisoners.
The support for enhancement of land and sea transportation of MCS is funded through India’s overall grant assistance of USD 13 million to the Maldives to undertake socially impactful and economically beneficial projects across the atolls.
