The International Islamic University Islamabad has awarded President Dr Mohamed Muizzu an honorary doctorate in Political Science and International Relations, recognising his contributions to public service and institutional development in the Maldives.
The honorary degree was conferred at a special ceremony presided over by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The university’s Director, Professor Dr Saad Al Ahmed, presented the degree to President Muizzu on behalf of the institution, following consultations between the two leaders and statements delivered by them.
In his address after receiving the honour, President Muizzu said a nation’s worth could not be measured by its size, stressing that the Maldives’ geographical area did not determine its value or standing.
The President recalled receiving his PhD in civil engineering 17 years ago, describing the honorary doctorate as a source of pride that exceeded what he had imagined at the time.
He said the honour carried a deeper meaning and belonged to the Maldivian people, while also reflecting the longstanding friendship between the Maldives and Pakistan.
President Muizzu said the recognition was closely linked to the responsibilities he carried as Head of State. He noted that while the world was witnessing unprecedented technological advancements, it continued to face wars, injustice and human suffering, emphasising the responsibility to speak out against such challenges.
He also said the university’s recognition symbolised the importance of advancing faith and knowledge together, ensuring that academic achievements served humanity. He added that the Maldives upheld these principles.
Although the Maldives is a small nation, President Muizzu said its worth was not determined by its geographical size. Similarly, he said, integrity could not be measured by economic or military strength.
He stressed that every nation deserved dignity and respect, and that every citizen should be treated with honour and dignity. He also said every generation should have the opportunity to leave behind a peaceful and just world.
President Muizzu concluded by reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to upholding agreements with Pakistan and working towards a stronger future built on knowledge, faith and service.
He accepted the honour with profound gratitude, acknowledging the responsibilities that came with the recognition.
