Former Minister of Home Affairs Abdulla Kamaluddeen has applied to register a new political party at the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM).
In a press statement issued on July 11, Kamaluddeen said he is registering a new political party called National Solidarity Party, which aims to work towards a solution for long-standing issues in the country which the existing political ideologies and philosophies in the Maldives have failed to resolve. He said additional information on the party will be shared once ECM permits the registration of the party.
Meanwhile, some members of Jumhooree Party (JP) have also announced their intention to form a new political party. The party is expected to be led by Parliamentarian Mohamed Nazim.
There are currently 10 political parties registered in the Maldives. However, only Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Jumhooree Party (JP) have a membership of above 10,000.
