Maldives records over 50,000 tourist arrivals in June

The Maldives has recorded over 50,000 tourist arrivals so far in June. Statistics from the Ministry of Tourism show 50,994 tourists visited the Maldives from June 1 to 27, which is a 49.8% decrease compared to the 101,564 tourist arrivals recorded in the same period in 2019.

The government has temporarily banned issuing visas to citizens from South Asian countries due to the increase in COVID-19 cases in the region, resulting in a halt of tourist arrivals from India and a decrease in tourist arrivals to the Maldives. However, the number of tourist arrivals recorded in June has been regarded as a success considering the current circumstances.

Furthermore, the statistics show the daily number of tourist visits is increasing, with 2,607 tourist arrivals on June 26. Currently, the Maldives is recording a daily average of 1,889 tourist arrivals.

Overall, the Maldives has recorded over 500,000 tourist arrivals so far this year, with 92,103 tourist arrivals in January, 96,882 arrivals in February, 109,585 in March, 91,200 in April, and 64,613 in May.

Russia is now the top source of tourist visits and makes up 24.4% of overall tourist arrivals, while India makes up the second-largest source of tourist arrivals to the Maldives this year. The tourism ministry has stated that tourists stay in the Maldives for an average of nine days.
