Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has decided to establish solar powered battery energy storage systems in 10 regions across the Maldives.
The establishment of battery energy storage systems is carried out under the Accelerating Renewable-Energy Integration and Sustainable Energy (ARISE) project. Under this project, 40 MWh battery energy storage systems will be established in 10 regions, including the atolls of Shaviyani, Baa, Lhaviyani, Dhaalu, Laamu, Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu as well as the cities of Addu, Kulhudhuffushi and Fuvahmulah.
The environment ministry stated prequalification application for the supply, installation, commissioning, operation and transfer of the systems has been opened until September 2. The deadline for the application is 1300hrs on September 2.
The environment ministry stated the project will enable excess power generated through solar energy to be stored and utilised later. The ministry said it will also resolve the stability issued faced by the power grid when the sustainable energy supplied to the grid exceeds 30%.
The aim of the ARISE project is to increase generation capacity from renewable energy sources and facilitate their integration into the grid infrastructure of the Maldives. The project is carried out for a 5-year period, starting from 2021.
