Fuvahmulah City Council has ordered businesses to temporarily bans expatriates from working due to the increasing number of foreign workers testing positive for COVID-19.
The city council stated the ban will be in place until June 14 and that it is a necessary step to stop the spread of COVID-19 in Fuvahmulah since most of the people currently testing positive are expatriates. The council has stated that some businesses can still allow expatriates to work after obtaining permission from the council. In this regard, the expatriates allowed to continue working are those employed as chefs and delivery workers at shops and restaurants.
The council has warned that it will take action against businesses that are allowing expatriates to work without permits.
There are currently 1,300 expatriate workers in Fuvahmulah City, with most working in the industrial sector. The latest statistics show that Fuvahmulah has recorded over 500 cases since the COVID-19 outbreak. The city has been placed under monitoring since May 6.
